What about Facebook?
Hey all what do you all think about facebook. I was/am hesitant because of all the uncontrolled links to people(testimony) and virus’ ect. I got on in a back door accidental way (family member set it up). But thought ok I’ll try it to see what it is. Been on about 2 weeks and it has found a bunch of old friend.. kind of nice, but I am a little freaked out about it all too. How does the programming figure out who I knew 10-20-30 years ago so well. Also if I post a picture without captions it links to the person that is in the photo…that really rang my bell. Its programming must be scanning for comments and links much like the military is now using for surveillance… And this is the free tech what’s the cutting edge stuff like. My original opinion has not changed still not thrilled with it. Since I got on some friends and family talk to us thru this instead of email or phone…and everyone else can see what they talk about. Nothing to hide but don’t like the public washing my underwear either… Whats you take on this tech as we have some christain programers here

RE: What about Facebook?
Brother, I personally stay away from all of those sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and any or all of the social networking sites. Much of it is for just the reasons you have stated. They mine so much information from you and you have no way to control who sees it and how many times.

I had a very bad experience with FaceBook and will not go back there again. I was being stalked by a man I believe is a homosexual. I have no idea who he was but he visited my page four times within a very short period of time. It gave me the willies.

There have been a lot of bad things that have happened on and because of those sites. Did you ask the well-meaning family member to not set up any more accounts in your name without your knowledge and consent? My word, our foreign missionaries have enough to deal with without having all of their goings on broadcast to anyone who wants to read about it.

There is a site called Grace Book that is Christian owned and operated that I do dabble with from time to time but that is the only one.

George

RE: What about Facebook?
Some like it, some don't. I've been over there for a long time now, shortly after it started up never had a problem, and you can control who see your information, or even your photos.

My suggestion.

Ro 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

If you feel its wrong, them don't, for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

The one I don't care about, if that other one, MySpace, its mostly 100% vulgar.

PS. I'm in contact with many who I went to school with on Facebook, some kin folks, plus some Christians from around the world. Once on my page I deleted a comment, it was made by a 1st cousin who I've not seen in about 20 years, she used a word of which I don't care to see. That is actually the only problem I've had.

I agree 150% with Bro George's assessment. My Pastor, and others, warned us about those "social networking" sites, in no uncertain terms. You have no way of actually knowing who is on the other end of that thing.

Bro George, tell me about GraceBook - I never heard of it before.

I use Facebook mainly to play Scrabble with my daughter at a distance, she doesn't mind if I only make a move every week of so. You can play it worldwide except for US and Canada.

RE: What about Facebook?
Brother James I am researching the information on GraceBook for you. The way I get in to it now is through the Reformers Unanimous Web Site. I do not believe it proprietary to RU though. If I can not find the information on my own I will contact the administrators of the RU web site and ask them about it.

In Christ,
George
(Incidentally, for those of you who do use the social networking sites I can not urge you strongly enough to make certain you have up-to-date virus software. a good firewall (the one that comes with Windows is not adequate,) and really good anti-spyware software on your system.)

RE: What about Facebook?
I just love the way the Lord works! We have been discussing the social networking sites lately and then lo and behold the following article appeared on FoxNews yesterday.

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/01/2...atestnews

Basically this article warns of an incredible amount of spam that is coming the way of users of FaceBook in the near future. Another good reason to stay away from it.

I don't know, all I know is that I'm not getting any spam from my Facebook account. But them, many people do not guard their email address on the internet and will post it anywhere in the open them complain about getting spam and asking how to stop it.

RE: What about Facebook?
I have two email accounts, one I get quite a lot of spam from, the other in 3 years I have never had any spam, although I do get a fair amount of advertising from companies that I have dealt with in the past.

Come to think of it I have three accounts the third is the same company as the second but I only use it to receive invoices for my online telephone account and emails from that company. Again I never have had spam on that account.
