RE: I had a small stroke
Sorry to hear that, Theresa. A few years ago our former Pastor had a series of TIAs (mini-strokes.) He is basically well & into his late 70s.

Have you an underlying health problem that calls for a life-style change? Over-weight; diabetes; sedentary; etc. Such a health event can serve as a valuable warning & enable you to make necessary adjustments to diet & activity.

A friend Hana was diagnosed diabetic when she was hospitalised with a stroke. She has rejected the standard dietary advice for diabetics, which is low fat/sugar/salt & plenty of complex carbohydrates. Now she is active & leads other elderly people on health walks. I met her on a diabetic forum & recently in person. When I was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago, I was over-weight & with high cholesterol. I was given a 25% probability of a heart attack in 10 years, & warned of strokes, etc. As one in a heart/diabetes research project I have recently been thoroughly tested by lots of non-invasive tests, without any heart or circulation problems indicated. At 70 I play tennis at club standard.

I pray that you will recover fully & there will be no recurrence.

RE: I had a small stroke
THe doctor just called it a small stroke but it may have been a TIA. Apparently it was going on for s while. diabetes; is the underlying health problem. i have started the changes needed. you are right it is a wake up call. I had just lost 45 pounds before the stroke. but i still have a ways to go. it was a case of waiting to late to start. it is hard to type so i will keep this short. i did get to witness to a young RN in training and even introduced her to my pastor.

RE: I had a small stroke
I'm type 2 diabetic for 10 years. I hope my experience will be helpful. I've progressed from struggling to get out of bed to a resumption of full activity. Praise our Lord for his guidance.

A forum I found extremely helpful is http://www.diabetes.co.uk/

I post as IanD & Hana posts as hanadr. It is basically a forum for diabetics to share experiences, so any questions are answered from experience, NOT from non-diabetic medics. The experience of many contributors is that the diet advice we are given by health professionals aggravates our condition & that reducing carbs improves control & stops complications progressing.

I joined early last year when I began to suffer complications, particularly disabling leg muscle pain. I thought my active life was over. I had followed the recommended complex carb diet & my Doctor was happy with my control. All he could suggest was quinine for cramp. Then I found the forum & learnt the benefits of low carb diet. I drastically reduced potatoes, bread, rice, cereals ... & increased veg, cheese, meat, nuts.

In 3 months I was free from pain & fully active again. Also I had lost 14 lb & cholesterol had improved.

RE: I had a small stroke
I am so sorry to hear this, Theresa. As you are well aware... stress will bring about a stroke. Please take "extra" good care of yourself and leave the worries up to Our Lord Jesus (I know... easier said than done.) You are in my prayers for a full recovery. God bless you.

In Christ ~

Molly
