Every one - New Years Tradition
We have a New Years Tradition, Black-eyed peas and Ham with corn bread. My family has been doing this for more than 100 years. Does your family have a new years tradition?

RE: Every one - New Years Tradition
We have black-eye peas and collared greens here, but it's just a tradition. We didn't have it today, but we'll get around to eating it
I don't know if we have been doing it for 100 years, but I have traced my family back to 1751 when we emigrated to here from Gemmingen, Germany on the ship "Duke of Wurttemberg". Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. |

RE: Every one - New Years Tradition
My Mom is from eastern NC. (tobacco farm country) and she has tried keeping that same 'NewYears' meal tradition for us. It included all the above 1) black-eyed peas; 2) collard greens; 3) ham; 4) and cornbread or hush-puppies (shut-up dogs as 'CT' calls em) :mrgreen:Mmmmmm

RE: Every one - New Years Tradition
I have tried to pass down all the traditions from our ancestors (that aren't pagans traditions or interfer with our worship of the lord). We don't have a lot of them but it is fun. We have also added our own to help us remeber how great our Lord is.
2 THESSALONIANS 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle JOSHUA 8 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day. RE: Every one - New Years Tradition
As a child, I never knew my patents to celebrate new year or to do anything different for it, neither did we at any church we attended. It was only when I met my wife who is from the "North" (Sheffield) where they make more fuss about it, that I did anything about new year.
I put "North" in inverted commas as I worked with a Geordie who considered Sheffield to be in the midlands whereas down here Edgware is considered the midlands. My wife was often teased down here because of her northern accent, but when she was in college in Durham she was teased for her southern accent. But I digress. No we have no family traditions for new year, or any other time. A bit boring realy. Edited, I put northern accent, should have said southern. My wife is a vegetarian, and has been since she was a baby. When she was born she was allergic to meat and fish fats. As the war had just started and we had ration books, she was given a vegetarian ration book. She has been a vegetarian ever since. Her father had severe stomach problems due to drinking a toxic cleaner his mother had decanted into a drinks bottle. He was not entirely vegetarian but he was unable to eat most meat dishes. We have a dish which we have for Christmas and most any time when our family get together. It was found in a pre-war Vegetarian Society cookbook and it is called Especially Good Lentil and Cheese Savoury. My younger daughter is also a vegie and makes a lot of this and freezes it. It is loved by vegies and carnivores alike. David Job 19:25 But as for me I know that my Redeemer liveth, And at last he will stand up upon the earth: |

RE: Every one - New Years Tradition
Same as most, black eyed peas, collard greens and cornbread...my husband really likes the cornbread part. Although I am saved and no longer do it for the roots involved in it, it's important to my mom that we be with her for the New Years meal. There is no harm in good food. We no longer used fatback or any other pork because of health reasons though.

RE: Every one - New Years Tradition
My hubby's family has the tradition of sauerkraut and pork (hot dogs may be substituted) on New Year's Day. We did that for a few years after we were married, but neither of us like sauerkraut enough to finish eating the leftovers, so...
We don't really have a tradition for that day. We have kind of made it a tradition to have lasagna on Christmas day, but for the past two years we weren't home - so we waited until New Year's day to have it. In past years, my hubby has gathered friends for a Risk game on that day. But lately we are more inclined just to spend the day at home, alone. Relaxing. Lovely. "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed." Pr 13:20 "Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company." Geo Wn http://daughterofroyalty.blogspot.com/ |
