Different Cultures

As a child my sister and I grew up in Oregon and later Nevada with our brothers. Our grandparents from both sides of the family were raised and started there families in the Oklahoma area. So we had a lot the southern traditions. Being pretty sheltered we thought all people in the west were living like us. When we hit about 10 or 11th grade we started to notice some differences.

I am not criticizing every culture has its differences. My sister moved to Missouri and then later to Illinois. (Her husband and her also lived in Japan, Utah and California they both spent 23 years in the military) Anyway, she started telling me some of the differences in the customs between the south-Midwest and the west. Especially in the church.

I have notice when I read blogs or web pages (I try to only read KJV only and Independent Fundamental Baptist sites.) there are things I have never heard of before.

Like ladies wearing dresses 24/7 I hadn't heard of that until i was well into my thirties, I attended a church in Northern Idaho and the ladies never wore pants, they never told me why so while i was there i wore dresses, never knew why.

Also I was reading a thread about girls staying under the protection of there fathers after the age of 18, I have never heard of that either.

My sister also spoke of lots of other things, I was just wondering how you know this stuff?

Sister Theresa I am obviously not a Sister but once in a while I chime in on the Sister's threads. This statement I have quoted above piqued my interest.

The Bible indicates that a woman is to be under the protection and authority of a man at all times. This can be the father, the husband or in the broadest concept of the idea it can be the Pastor.

If you go back through the new testament and read about the relationships between men and women you will see that the references deal with the relationship between men and women and do not include being independent or anything of that sort. God made woman to be companion and helpmeet to the man. If the young lady is not married of course her first allegiance is to God but then it is to her father.

I don't think I express myself clearly, my message seems unclear. I was just wondering why churches in the west and south are so different?

I was born in Mississippi but have claimed Louisiana "home" since I was 17. My daddy was a career Army man, so we travelled a lot.. in other words, I've not lived in the South exclusively. I've learned to undo many things in the past 10 years - those which you mentioned, and these: pagan holidays, Church Inc and all the trappings, and numerous other traditions that added baggage to my life. Of course, you should use discernment with anything you stumble across, but I've found that following the Lord's lead and putting Him first in all I do, say, see, and hear, allows my life to fit together like a puzzle. No, it's not an easy road and many have abandoned me. But I continue to keep on keeping on...
