GreekTim: As I said, this is a BIG can of worms.
As you said, the phrase "the horn of" in Psalm 92:10 is italicized. That means that the KJB translators were identifying the phrase as not being a word-for-word translation, but rather implied by the context.
(Here it goes - sprong! as I dive off the deep end)
I believe, as I have stated in other posts, that God has given to me in English exactly what He intended for me to have. Those italics don't faze me at all. God's providential guidance of the translation extends to the italics (for me).
For the benefit of my sanity, make comments about translations being/not being inspired in the Inspiration thread, rather than here. Keep your comments in the context of support for or disagreement with the use of italics. Thanks.
Example of the necessity of italics to avoid error:
2 Samuel 21:19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.
Remove the italics and David's victory goes to Elhanan.
The following is one of a number of examples where the NT uses an OT italicized word without the italics, meaning the word(s) exists in the Greek, even though not in the Hebrew. (implied instead) Note the word "word":
Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
In the NT verse "word" is not italicized, meaning it is a direct translation of a Greek word "ramati"*. The Hebrew for "word" - "dabar"* is not in the Hebrew verse. Did Matthew by inspiration indicate that the translator-supplied word is correctly added to Deuteronomy?
* I am using the writings of another KJBO who has Hebrew/Greek skills, so kindly point out if he is wrong about these words.
