Keep it Fresh

Exodus 16:19-20

'And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

'Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.'

The children of Israel had begun to murmur against Moses and Aaron because they thought they were going to starve while in the wilderness. God told Moses that He would rain down bread from Heaven for the people to eat. He instructed them only to get what they needed in order to make it through that day. For six days God would do this for them and on the seventh day they would have rest from gathering it off the ground. He was going to make sure that their needs were supplied each and every day.

1. God will provide our needs.

In verse three we see the Israelites lack of faith in God. He had not brought them out into the wilderness just for them to die of starvation. He had a plan for them and He was going to make sure that they had what they needed to carry out that plan. They had trusted God to lead them out of Egypt and through the Red Sea on dry ground, but they would not trust Him now to provide for their physical needs.

How true this is today of many Christians. We will place our faith in Him as the only way to Heaven and we will trust in Him to take us there when we die, yet we will not trust the Lord to provide for our daily needs. We need to realize that no matter what our need is God has the ability to supply it. God does not take us out into the wilderness just to watch us die (so to speak). He will provide us with those things that are necessary for us to fulfill the will of God.

Now, that is not to say that He will give us everything which we want or desire. Sometimes, what we desire will lead us away from the will of God instead of drawing us closer to it. That is why we need to keep a close relationship with Christ. Then our desires will begin to change to match those things which are within God's will.

2. We need to go to God each day.

God was going to provide new manna for them each and every day. He had specifically instructed them not to keep the manna from one day to the next because it would spoil and be no good. God wanted them to rely on Him each and every day for their needs. He did not want them to rely totally on themselves and what they could accomplish.

In our own lives it is vitally important that we go to God each and every day trusting in Him to take care of us throughout it. Many times we would rather rely on our ownselves to make it through the day instead of relying on God. Pride and selfishness are a couple of things that keeps us from going to God each day. Many times people fail to go to God because they know that He is going to lead them in a direction their flesh does not want to go. Other times they know the Holy Spirit will convict them of some sin they are harboring in their life. If we are ever going to grow as a Christian then we are going to have to develop a daily relationship with Christ.

3. Our relationship with God will spoil if we do not keep it fresh.

God had instructed the Israelites not to keep any manna from one day to the next because it would spoil. God was going to supply them with fresh manna each and every morning so they had no need to keep any after they were done using it. He did not want them living off of day old food, instead, He wanted them to have it fresh each morning.

God does not want us to have a relationship with Him that has become old and spoiled. He wants us to keep our relationship with Him fresh and the only way we can do that is to meet with Him each and every day. Some days we may even have to meet with Him more than once in order to keep it fresh. If we fail to keep our relationship with Christ fresh then it will start to get old and spoiled and we will lose our fellowship with Him and the Father. The longer we go without refreshing our relationship with Him the farther away from Him we will get and the harder it will be to draw closer to Him. I believe this is why many Christians who give a testimony of being saved fall out of church. They failed to keep it fresh and now it has done spoiled (so to speak).

As Christians we need to keep our relationship with Christ fresh at all times so that we can be the type of Christians we should be.

In Christ,

Jeremiah 20:9b
'But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.'
