Canadian Christian ministry fined $23,000 in gay discrimination case
I found this on the onlinebaptist.som site. Apologies if it has been posted here before.
Canadian Christian ministry fined $23,000 in gay discrimination case
4/29/2008
One of Canada’s largest Christian ministries dedicated to caring for the disabled was fined $23,000 recently by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario for allegedly discriminating against a former homosexual employee.
Connie Heintz claimed discrimination against Christian Horizons after she said she was “subjected to a poisoned work environment” and pressured into quitting her job after she entered a homosexual relationship – which was in violation of her work contract back in 2000.
In line with its Christian foundation and principles, the ministry requires that all its employees sign “morality statements” vowing to abstain from immoral behavior, including pornography, pre-marital, extra-marital, and homosexual activity as a condition of employment.
In a recently made public ruling, Michael Gottheil, the single adjudicator representing the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, ruled against Christian Horizons, ordering the organization to pay Heintz $23,000 in fines plus two years wages and benefits.
Gottheil also ordered that the organization abandon its Christian principles barring homosexual behavior and issued mandates that it begin requiring all employees to attend a homosexual oriented “human rights training program.”
In a statement, Barbara Hall, the Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, wrote approvingly of the decision by the tribunal.
"This decision is important because it sets out that when faith-based and other organizations move beyond serving the interests of their particular community to serving the general public, the rights of others, including employees, must be respected,” she said.

What a disgrace. I'm sure we'll see this in the US at some point.

You got that right, Nate. Most Americans are GUTLESS! They have developed a "knee-jerk" reaction against Fred Phelpps and his ministry, preferring rather to remain in their "bunker mentality." The only time a Christian in America gets involved in something such as this, is when it has gone beyond the point of "no return." For example, when THEIR child is approached or recruited into a sodomite life-style, THEN they begin to have their attention focused. Americans are so naive and apathetic, until they get slapped in the teeth with something. A real shame. We should be throwing out and impeaching these godless, liberal magistrates and judges who make these stupid decisions. But, most Christians have this "what can I do?" attitude, and forget that Jesus said OCCUPY til I come!

I wouldn't be at all surprised that by the end of my life-time (only 24) America will outlaw preaching against sin such as homosexuality. All I have to say is get the jail cell ready for me cause I aint shying away from the truth!

I think somebody over here has already been prosecuted for that, I seem to remember. The key law in that case, is that a sodomite can complain if he is "offended" by any comment, or preaching,
There was a case when christians were told they would be arrested if they went to a park where there was a "gay pride" rally, as the sodomites may be offended. When the christians sai that they were affended by the sodomites teaching, it didn't cut any ice.

RE: Canadian Christian ministry fined $23,000 in gay discrimination case
The greatest concern that I have about this is out of the thousands of churches that claim to be fundamental, only a handful will stand up against the pressure to be quiet.
I want to tell you a true story from the past to illustrate the point:
We have had our school since 1976. In the early days (the '70's), because the number of Christian schools were exploding, many states did not have any real awareness of the situation. In an attempt to control the growth (and loss of tax dollars), a number of states instituted regulations requiring some form of licensing (permission) from the state for a church to operate a day school. David Gibbs, Jr. was involved in a court case for one church that ultimately launched Christian Law Association.
In the early 80's, a small church was threatened by the state of NC to follow their rules or the church would be locked and the pastor jailed. They had no grounds constitutionally to do so, and David got involved. I was at a meeting where this was being discussed, and we came up with a plan of action. Over 100 of us pastors signed a declaration that was to be presented to the prosecutor for the case. In the declaration, we stated that if the church's pastor was put in jail, one of us would take his place. If that one was jailed, the next on the list would fill in. We dared this prosecutor to put 100 preachers in jail for doing what God told them to do. The state relented.
I believe that it will come down to the same kind of action. Pastors will have to be willing to lose their freedom, and churches will have to be willing to lose their buildings in the face of pressure to conform to the world's religion of humanism.
An aside note:
A few months ago, our ultra-liberal city commission voted to add protection for "transgendered" individuals so that they would not feel pressured when using public restrooms. Businesses are now required to accommodate these individuals based on how they might feel on any given day. The bottom line is that a business cannot stop anyone from using whichever restroom that person wishes to use on that day. Yesterday I learned that there is a group that is getting petitions signed to bring the issue to the ballot box in the upcoming election. Out of over 100,000 registered voters, all that is needed is 5,600 petitions. Please pray that will happen.

Excellent points, Mongol Servant. We as American Christians should be more bold and utilize our freedom of speech while we still have it. I have been discussing the situation where the government raided the compound only on the accusation of abuse. In these discussions I am seeing some VERY scary ideas being bounced around forums on the internet regarding how the government should regulate and disband "religious groups" that separate themselves from society. I pressed them further and they admitted that they would support the government doing so, even if said groups are breaking no laws! All for the "good of society and the children" of course.

Political correctness has been allowed to cement itself in US society because people didn't take it seriously. Its agenda is very serious, though, and will result in the freedoms of people of faith being trampled on more and more.

Pretty soon we're going to have a line of bathrooms a mile long to accommodate all the various forms of sexual perversion that have been invented. It would be funny if it wasn't so true. There are many people in bondage to homosexuality and the like and our society is encouraging them to embrace their chains. There are many who have been freed through faith in Christ who have powerful testimonies that need to be spread in front of our society. I am so thankful for organizations like the ACLJ (American Center for Law & Justice) who vigorously defend Christian individuals and organizations against lawsuits because of their faith and morality.

Bro Tim,
I think I remember the case in NC that you're speaking of - was it Kent Kelley, back around the early 80's? I recall some of that incident, but some of the particulars elude me (I have "part-timer's disease"). That was also around the time that the Democrats in NC were trying to oust Jesse Helms and hoped that the Democrat attorney general, Rufus Edmisten, would be a "shew in" for Governor, to replace the Democrat incumbent, Jim Hunt. Hunt came out in favor of the sodomite agenda, and because of that, and his stand against Christian/home schoolers, the electorate voted in Republican Congressman, Jim Martin, as Governor. It completely shocked everybody in the media and administration at the time, and Senator Helms was reelected too!

It may have been. It is a vague memory at best for me now.
