I've made a new commitment to exercise to regain fitness. My 6th wedding anniversary just passed and I realized I need to get to get back to exercise, cut some excess from my diet, and get back in shape when I had to buy the next size of pants for the 1st time ever. *cue laughter* Laughing I hope I'm not the only one that needs to trim some inches on the ol waist!

In high school I was on the track team and ran several miles daily, but then college came along and I did not stick to my routine through working nearly full time, classes, and recreation. I've never been one to lift weights and I don't plan to start because I'm not trying to be a body builder, I just want to be fit. I prefer to do body weight exercises such as squats, pushups, situps (crunches), etc in addition to jogging and/or running. Anyone have a regimen they prefer to use that has yielded results?
Hi Nate,
Try Matt Furey's "Combat Conditioning" workout. It does not include weights, but is mostly physical exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, squats, etc). He has several different programs (I ran into the "Combat Conditioning" through a web-link from WorldNetDaily), but I have really enjoyed the results from this one. You can pick/tailor the exercies to fit your daily schedule, and it can be done indoors during any season of the year. He stresses control of your body weight and balance, lung power, and reps. I feel 100% better and my aching knees have gotten much better as a result. Try it and see.
I just looked at that very workout! It seems interesting and from the testimonials, including yours, quite effective. I used to be able to play basketball for hours without sucking wind, sadly such is not the case anymore and I have noticed my knees bothering me, too. Perhaps exercise will improve my sleep also, as I do not feel very rested even after a good 8 hours of sleep. I'll look into this and probably give it a shot.
I follow my father's sage advice:

"When I think of exercising, I sit down until the thought goes away."

Good one Brother Tim! I like this also:

(1Ti 4:8) For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. (emphasis mine)

I fall back on that one often.

HMMM! Maybe there's a new version that says "bodily exercise profits nothing". It might be new revelation!

It's most likely in one of those "modern versions" somewhere. Since they change so many words and verses one of them most likely changed that one also.

Yeah, for a bunch of stodgy old fundamental elitist Christians we can still share a laugh now and then.

I was a trim 140 lb when we married, & put on 14 lb a year in the next two years. Over the next 25 years I went up to about 196 lb. I'm now down to 177, having dropped 5 lb in the last two weeks.

At 196 lb I was so unfit, it was going to be downhill health-wise if I didn't take action. Exercise only works if you can sustain it, which means:
1) do something you enjoy
2) with people you can build friendships with

I resumed tennis, which I'd abandoned what with marriage, raising 5 children & working full time. I was able to, because I started worrking from home, & the children were grown up, so I didn't feel guilty leaving my wife at home while I went out.

2-3 sessions a week restored my fitness & I lost about 8 lb in a few months.

Then I developed diabetes 10 years ago. (Not recommended as part of your programme.) That required diet changes, to a healthier low sugar-salt-fat diet. Substantial amounts of unrefined carbohydrates are recommended by the medics. My diet kept my wife healthy after a heart attack. We now go to the hospital gym for heart rehab exercises. I stayed healthy & lost a further 7 lb, stabilising at about 182. Then this year I joined a diabetic forum, where I found a low carbohydrate diet strongly recommended. 10 days ago I started reducing my carbs by 50%. My blood sugar immediately dropped, & so has my weight.

And at 69 I can still play a good game of tennis at club standard. Two hours - 3 sets, 30 games.

I try this with 100% success.........1/2 a sit-up upon rising from bed, the other 1/2 when returning. As we age that means more & more sit-ups throughout the night, who knows maybe 4 -6 per night alone!!! WHEW I feel better already.......howsaboutyou?
